WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Sunday's service will be livestreaming to our YouTube channel from the churchyard as we gather for in-person worship.
Please read carefully this letter to the parish detailing our worship procedures for the next several weeks.
If you plan to attend worship in the churchyard, you must sign up here. We are limited to 25 people. If you are person 26 or higher, you will be given first dibs on the signup next week.
Our service begins at 9:30am from St. Nick's, and those participating from home can click here to access the service online.
There will not be a service bulletin. To print the service beforehand, or to download a PDF to your smart phone, tablet, or other device, click here (opens a PDF in Google Drive). To see the readings beforehand you can always visit The Lectionary Page. To access the prayerbook online, please click here.
Masks are required. Please bring your own. A limited number of single-use masks will be available should you forget. Hand sanitizer will be available for all.
The building, including the bathroom, is off-limits. Please plan accordingly.
Please bring your own chair, and maintain a six feet distance from those not in your family. The lawn is marked to help with this.
Dan Fannon will provide organ music before the service. Please keep your distance from Dan, who has a compromised immune system.
There will be no coffee hour following the services. We have plans to phase back in some kind of gathering, especially for our folks worshiping from home, at some point in the future.

Holy Communion Resumes this Sunday, 9/6, 9:30am
- A NOTE FROM MTR. LEIGH, THE VESTRY & THE REOPENING COMMITTEE -
Dear St. Nick’s Community,
I am truly looking forward to resuming Holy Communion at our church this coming Sunday. It will have been six solid months since the Eucharist has been celebrated at St. Nick's, and I can’t even tell you know much I’ve missed it.
As we begin to re-integrate this component of our worship, we want you to be aware of our procedure for administering Holy Communion going forward. As with all things related to the coronavirus, this is our plan for now. We continue to monitor rates of infection and will adjust our practices accordingly.
First, we will continue for now to worship outside in the churchyard with all the same safeguards in place: limited to 25 people; all spaced six feet apart; all wearing masks that cover the nose and mouth; all bringing their own chairs and copies of the liturgy; temperature checks at the stairs; signing up in advance; building off limits; abbreviated service length.
For Communion, Mtr. Leigh will follow a customary distributed by Bishop Dietsche for the administration of Holy Communion. Here are the main points of those instructions with a few additional directions:
-Communion will be given to the Congregation in one kind only: the bread, in the form of a wafer. A small amount of wine will be consecrated and consumed at the end of Communion by the Celebrant only.
-The credence table will be set by one member of the Altar Guild who will wear a mask and gloves. That person will wipe down all vessels with a sterilizing cleaner or wipe. The bread will be handled by the Celebrant from start to finish, meaning that the Celebrant will remove the wafers from where they are stored in the sacristy, moving them to the Altar area before the service begins.
-Immediately prior to Communion, the Celebrant will wash her hands in sight of the people using an outside basin, soap, and water, in addition to using hand sanitizer.
-The Celebrant will set the table, covering the wafers with a corporal and positioning them to one side of the altar (not directly below her face).
-The Congregation will remain at their places for the duration of Communion. The Celebrant will deliver Communion to each family group, dropping a wafer into each outstretched palm.
-We will provide a 2 oz. bottle of hand sanitizer for each family group (or you can bring and use your own). As you will be making contact with your mouth, please use hand sanitizer before and after receiving Communion.
-Wait until the Celebrant has passed by you before lifting your mask from the bottom, keeping your nose covered, to consume your wafer, immediately lowering your mask back over your mouth after you have eaten your wafer.
-No one must receive Communion. If instead you prefer a blessing, please cross your arms over your chest and the Celebrant will offer a blessing without physical contact.
-In the event of rain, do not come to church unless you are a reader. A small altar party will gather in the church to worship and we will continue to stream that service on our YouTube channel.
As the fall approaches, we will likely be adding another service (or more!) to accommodate our growing numbers. In consultation with the Wardens and Vestry, the Reopening Committee and I will communicate those plans with you as they unfold.

"Hi all. This is Mtr. Leigh Hall here warmly inviting you to our new Book Group at St. Nicks as we read together “How to be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi. You know as well as I do that we are currently grappling in new ways with the very old and very deep issue of racism in America. Professor Kendi thoughtfully and carefully distinguishes between being an anti-racist vs. being not-racist and begins the book by describing his own upbringing in a Christian household first in New York City, then in Northern Virginia. He has won numerous awards, honors, and accolades and you can learn more about Professor Kendi and his work, linked here.
Our Book Group will meet six times on Wednesdays - 9/2, 9/9, 9/23, 9/30, 10/7 & 10/14. We will meet at 7pm via Zoom, and the link for that meeting is below. We’ll follow a rough reading schedule to aid in our discussion, covering the introduction and the first two chapters at our session on 9/2. I’ll include the remaining reading schedule down below. On October 22, the Diocese of New York will sponsor an author event with Professor Kendi via Zoom, and I should also note that the entire Diocese of New York has been invited to read this book together this fall.
I hope you’ll join us for this informative discussion as we all try to learn how to be antiracists.

Video Project: We would like to put together a video montage of readers and sponsors for the 2020 Read-A-Thon where you either describe your favorite book or why you love reading so much — so please think about preparing either a Selfie with your favorite book from the Summer of 2020 OR a short (30 second) video of you explaining what you like about reading and/or your favorite book. We’ll be sending a note out with instructions on where to upload your video/picture in early September. At the end of September we will assemble these into a collected video and share with all participants.

MEMORIAL VIDEO PROJECT: Remembering Teresa Croke
Many of you have expressed concern and deep sadness that we will not be able to gather to celebrate and mourn the death of our beloved parishioner, Teresa. I join with you in that concern and sadness. And so, as a way for our church to express our love and grief, I'd like us to make a video.
I'm inviting you to record yourself with your smart phone or device (turned horizontally, not vertically) offering your tributes and memories of Teresa. If you are able, I'd ask that you upload your video to this shared folder in Google Drive. If you are not able to record yourself, but would still like to participate, email us, and we can figure out a way to record you. If you'd like to write something and do a voiceover, we can do that too. If you have pictures to share, we can scan those and add them. The options are really limitless. The target date for the release of this video is some point later in September.
END OF LIFE PLANNING The Coronavirus pandemic has likely made us aware of our own mortality in new and profound ways. It is the responsibility of the Church to assist its members in preparing for death "while they are in health," which often entails the preparation of a will, or, at the least, the preparation of a plan in the event of a member's death. We have prepared a funeral planning form that will help you begin to think through and to plan your funeral, and we encourage you to begin this process seriously if you haven't already.
While the Rector will be away for most of August, you can download these forms and begin to fill them in. Upon her return from vacation, Mtr. Leigh will be available to meet with you to discuss these matters and to help you plan your funeral. We wish to offer special thanks to Bert and Rena Mazzuto for their assistance in developing our funeral planning forms for St. Nick's. Thank you, Bert and Rena!

DURING THE CORONA VIRUS CRISIS
We are grateful for each and every dollar we receive here at St. Nick's, and each one of those dollars goes to good use. We keep a lean budget, and our finance committee carefully monitors every line.
While we are not meeting in person for worship on Sunday mornings, we expect that plate donations will drop. And with so much economic uncertainty, we know that home budgets might change. In order to facilitate continued giving, we have reactivated our church PayPal account. Using the button below, you can make your pledge or donation online.

Additionally, you can also set up auto-draft from your own bank account using your online banking. This will cause a paper check to be sent to our mailbox at 37 Point St., which we are checking each day. The Vestry are doing the normal count, and our parish administrator, Dana, continues to record pledges in our system.
BUDDY GROUPS Our parish has been broken up into nine groups of six or seven households and assigned parishioners to be captains of those groups. The captains are a mix of vestry and other lay leaders in the parish. They will be in touch with you to check in and to make sure all is well with you. They will also help me to know what your needs are, be they pastoral or logistical. While you should feel free to call any member of the parish now, Buddy Groups will ensure that no one slips through the cracks, and that our elders, in particular, are getting the care they need right now.

Many of you have expressed concern and deep sadness that we will not be able to gather to celebrate and mourn the death of our beloved parishioner, Teresa. I join with you in that concern and sadness. And so, as a way for our church to express our love and grief, I'd like us to make a video.
I'm inviting you to record yourself with your smart phone or device (turned horizontally, not vertically) offering your tributes and memories of Teresa. If you are able, I'd ask that you upload your video to this shared folder in Google Drive. If you are not able to record yourself, but would still like to participate, email us, and we can figure out a way to record you. If you'd like to write something and do a voiceover, we can do that too. If you have pictures to share, we can scan those and add them. The options are really limitless. The target date for the release of this video is some point later in September.
END OF LIFE PLANNING The Coronavirus pandemic has likely made us aware of our own mortality in new and profound ways. It is the responsibility of the Church to assist its members in preparing for death "while they are in health," which often entails the preparation of a will, or, at the least, the preparation of a plan in the event of a member's death. We have prepared a funeral planning form that will help you begin to think through and to plan your funeral, and we encourage you to begin this process seriously if you haven't already.
While the Rector will be away for most of August, you can download these forms and begin to fill them in. Upon her return from vacation, Mtr. Leigh will be available to meet with you to discuss these matters and to help you plan your funeral. We wish to offer special thanks to Bert and Rena Mazzuto for their assistance in developing our funeral planning forms for St. Nick's. Thank you, Bert and Rena!

of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses." (p. 445)

DURING THE CORONA VIRUS CRISIS
We are grateful for each and every dollar we receive here at St. Nick's, and each one of those dollars goes to good use. We keep a lean budget, and our finance committee carefully monitors every line.
While we are not meeting in person for worship on Sunday mornings, we expect that plate donations will drop. And with so much economic uncertainty, we know that home budgets might change. In order to facilitate continued giving, we have reactivated our church PayPal account. Using the button below, you can make your pledge or donation online.

Additionally, you can also set up auto-draft from your own bank account using your online banking. This will cause a paper check to be sent to our mailbox at 37 Point St., which we are checking each day. The Vestry are doing the normal count, and our parish administrator, Dana, continues to record pledges in our system.
BUDDY GROUPS Our parish has been broken up into nine groups of six or seven households and assigned parishioners to be captains of those groups. The captains are a mix of vestry and other lay leaders in the parish. They will be in touch with you to check in and to make sure all is well with you. They will also help me to know what your needs are, be they pastoral or logistical. While you should feel free to call any member of the parish now, Buddy Groups will ensure that no one slips through the cracks, and that our elders, in particular, are getting the care they need right now.
