- Special Announcement -

It is with great joy that we announce today the calling of our new Rector Rev Leigh Ellen Hall. Leigh is currently Associate Rector at St Paul’s Church in Albany, Georgia. Upon her arrival on June 1, she will become the second Rector in our parish’s history. Her calling was made in a unanimous vote of the Vestry, following a unanimous recommendation of the nine member Search Committee. We can’t wait for the entire congregation to get to know Leigh and concur with our conviction that our parish will flourish under our new Rector. As we said to the congregation when we started this transition last May- the Church of St Nicholas on the Hudson has a bright future!
Leigh is a native of Georgia who graduated from the University of Georgia and Virginia Theological Seminary. She was ordained in 2009 and has served in various clergy positions since then focusing on pastoral care and educational ministries. Leigh will be communicating directly with the congregation in the days (and years!) to come but we wanted to share an item that she included in her background about the future of the Church-
I am acknowledging that our church is changing and that we must be more intentional about growing and sustaining our churches. We can’t wait and see if they will come; we have to make our churches more attractive. To me that means preaching sermons that are more relevant to our world today, offering formation opportunities that teach about Christ, the church and our place in it by engaging in spiritual outreach to those in need, and by deepening our spirituality and the spirituality of those we serve in our parishes. This deep, meaningful connection is essential, I believe, to preparing for the Church of the future.
We also have recordings of a few sermons that Leigh has delivered in recent months and have posted those audio files on our website and on Facebook.
St Nicholas has grown much over the past months of transition. The ramp, siding, windows, lights, plaster and paint are important, as will be the coming changes in landscaping. We have nested well. We are now ready to open our parish family to a new Rector. We are a parish that has overtly challenged one another to look for and to believe in an irrationally bright future! We did so in committing to remain a congregation twelve years ago, and in becoming, three years ago, the first newly incorporated full parish of the diocese in over thirty years, and again last year in committing to a capital campaign to restore our building. We will continue to face challenges both spiritually and in other areas necessary to sustaining our parish. But today- loudly and clearly- the Vestry, the Search Committee and our new Rector are of one voice that we will look to a joyful future through the parish of St Nicholas on the Hudson.
It is essential that this joyful note include two expressions of gratitude. Our Search Committee worked tirelessly to find a person of the right energy, spirituality and style. They literally posted the position around the globe. They met with Leigh over the Christmas holidays and then traveled to Albany Georgia to hear her preach and to spend more time getting to know her. Stacey Mesler chaired a large group that was incredibly generous with their time and talents. They detailed every interaction with each candidate, and in the end spoke with one voice of recommendation. We are very grateful for their participation in this journey. In addition to Stacey, the members of the Search Committee were Christine Ackerly, Sarah Brannen, Paul Conrad, Rick Levitt, Jack Parry, Lee Ann Pomplas, Alex Reese, and Michelle Robbins. Thank You all.
Finally, we will say thank you and good-bye this Sunday to Peter Sipple. Peter and Margaret leave on a long planned vacation next week, so this will be an abrupt end to his tenure here. Peter’s wise advice and pastoral care for the Vestry and parish members has sustained us on our path. He remains a friend to the parish and we suspect his counsel will continue to be a resource to Leigh as she begins her first tenure as a parish rector. We hope you can join us this Sunday to thank Peter.
