Hello Parishioners,
A big welcome this Sunday to Father Fred Jackson, who will be leading the service with me, and giving the sermon at both the 9 & 10 am services. Also, we have a lot of worthy volunteer causes below, from our Love INC benefit concert to a march in Albany to a youth Civil Rights pilgrimage. Plus Episcopal Charities Sunday on May 11. Take a quick glance, and contact me with any questions you have about any of these. Have a good weekend, and see you Sunday! -Astrid
RURAL AND MIGRANT MINISTRIES JUSTICE FOR FARMWORKERS DAY MONDAY MAY 5 + A REALLY GOOD SPEECH For those who attended our final class of the farming series, and also for those who didn't, the march for the passage of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act is next Monday in Albany. If you are interested in attending, please email Astrid right away. Also, the Rural and Migrant Ministry blog is always worth a look. The latest link is a speech by Ruth Reichel about the importance for "foodies" to fight for worker justice. (Astrid got to attend this speech in NYC last Thurs - it's worth a read!)
DIOCESAN SPONSORED AND LED CIVIL RIGHTS PILGRIMAGE FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS AUGUST 7-9 This pilgrimage, just announced this week, is a great chance for youth around the diocese to learn a bit about the Civil Rights Movement. And it's only $150 per student. Here's a flyer, and you can contact Astrid for more information if a youth you know might be interested.
EPISCOPAL CHARITIES SUNDAY IS MAY 11 Every year we join churches throughout the diocese to raise money and awareness for Episcopal Charities of New York. The proceeds from the collection we take on that day will go directly toward feeding programs in the diocese.
LOVE INC BENEFIT CONCERT SUNDAY MAY 4, 4 PM Support this worthy organization by attending a benefit concert, proceeds from which go directly to helping people in need in our area. See flyers around the church for more information, or talk to Liz Pavelka at church.
COMMUNITY NEWS: REE-PLAY SALE IN BEACON THIS WEEKEND The tenth annual Ree Play sale is this week. It is a GIANT community sale of baby and children's clothes, toys, furniture, and more. All proceeds benefit children's programming in Beacon. We will have amazing deals, so come and stock up on clothes and gear for the kids. Date: May 2 and 3, 9 am - 1 pm, May 4, 10 am - 1 pm Location: University Settlement Theatre, 724 Wolcott Avenue, Beacon NY 12508.
WANT TO RECEIVE THE EPISCOPAL NEW YORKER? The quarterly diocesan newspaper is free and available to anyone who wants to receive it. Just send your request to Cara, and she will send along your mailing address to the Episcopal New Yorker office.
FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING NEXT WEDNESDAY MAY 7 AT 7 PM The finance committee always welcomes new members! Contact Astrid with questions.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: TWO "MOSTLY EMAIL" COMMITTEES We need volunteers in two areas: education and stewardship. These will be "get-it-done" committees, and most - maybe all - of the work for these groups can be accomplished by email. The education committee will work with Astrid to come up with ideas for occasional after-church classes and/or series. The stewardship committee's main task will be to come up with professional but creative ways to present our financial needs and goals for our fall stewardship campaign (bearing in mind "stewardship" can be defined more broadly than just the fall financial campaign, if the committee wishes). If you are interested in learning more and/or joining one of these groups, please contact Astrid right away by replying to this email. Thank you!
COFFEE HOURS: SIGN UP HERE OR AT THE CHURCH You can sign up at the link above, or in the undercroft. Thank you!
PARISH BIBLE STUDY ON THE BOOK OF ACTS RUNS EVERY TUESDAY AT ZION CHURCH Our weekly Bible studies run every week in the library of Zion Church, Wappingers Falls, 7:30 - 8:30 PM. Join any time! Come learn all about this very interesting book of our Bible, which contains a lot of great early church history. ALSO, remember there is a morning Bible study at Zion Church, led by Mother Magdalene, at 10:30 am (service beforehand at 9:30).
REMEMBER THE FOOD PANTRY Make it a goal for the new year to buy one item for the food pantry every time you go to the grocery store. Your donations of food are taken to the Zion food pantry each week. As the before meal grace in the Book of Common Prayer says, "Keep us mindful of the needs of those with less."
ROTA THROUGH JUNE The rota for readers, servers, and altar guild can be found HERE. If you see anything that needs to be changed, please email Cara at [email protected].
